Alex Varley is CEO of Media Access Australia, an Australian not-for-profit organisation working to develop media access for disabled people, particularly through subtitling and audio description. Alex has presented at many conferences on media access issues, looking at DVD access, cinema, and the transition to free-to-air television. He was previously the general manager of the Australian Caption Centre (now Red Bee Media Australia) and has held senior roles in a major theatre company, museum and the oil industry. He also serves on the board of a not-for-profit mental health organisation.
MAA collaborates internationally with consumer and advocacy organisations, as well as suppliers and industry representatives. MAA also has special advisory status to the Australian regulator the Australian Communications and Media Authority, works closely with the Australian Human Rights and Equal Opportunities Commission, broadcasters, government and disability organisations and access companies. MAA publishes the acclaimed quarterly the Media Access Report, a factual review of issues in media access from around the world.
